Communication: the universal healthcare skill

Healthcare professionals deal with difficult communication situations on a daily basis, from breaking bad news to discussing issues such as resuscitation.

The National Advanced Communication Skills Training Course

This course is based on the Connected training course. Originally designed for healthcare practitioners working with people with cancer, this course is suitable for all healthcare professionals dealing with challenging communication situations.

This two-day course gives participants the opportunity to practise their communication skills in a safe and supportive environment and receive feedback on how they could adapt their communication in future. The course has been internationally audited and is one of the few communications courses that has clear evidence of changing practice over time.

Enhancing Communication Skills in Health and Social Care

This course is designed for healthcare professionals who want an in-depth look at the models and evidence underpinning good communication skills, while getting an opportunity to practise these skills in a safe environment. This is an accredited academic module and, on completion of an essay, attendees can gain academic credit at either level 6 (BSc) or level 7 (Masters).

In addition to established communication courses,  the School can also design bespoke courses to meet the individual needs of your organisation. This could include delivering the Advanced Communication Skills Training on site or developing a brand new course, for example focusing on a particular communication issue, for example ‘Do Not Resuscitate’.

It was totally relevant to practice and I left feeling stimulated to think and reflect after every session

Communication and End-of-Life Care (advanced skills)

Improving communication is a key element of The Care Quality Commission End-of-Life Care Strategy. The Care Quality Commission found that 50% of complaints to organisations tend to be about communication and that the majority of these relate to end-of-life care.

As it is recognised that people die in a range of different settings, it is becoming increasingly important that healthcare professionals feel confident when communicating with patients and their loved ones about end-of-life care, and that this happens much sooner in the process.

The School offers a range of courses on palliative and end-of- life care. These courses provide healthcare professionals with the holistic skills they need to care sensitively and effectively for people at the end of their life, from assessing and managing symptoms to engaging in difficult conversations. Modules include:

For healthcare professionals who would like to undertake a career in Palliative Care, the School offers a BSc(Hons) or Graduate Diploma in Palliative and Supportive Care.

Both the School’s palliative and end-of-life courses are relevant to all healthcare professionals that work with people in their last year of life, regardless of condition or setting.
