The Royal Marsden School

Janet Baker BSc, MSc, PGCTLHE, FHEA, RNT

Lecturer Practitioner

My nursing career has primarily been oncology-focused, first within the solid tumour setting and then most recently, in haemato-oncology and stem cell transplant. My clinical roles have been varied and include working as a Haematology Research Nurse, Sister of a Haemato-Oncology Ambulatory Care Unit, Stem Cell Transplant Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Apheresis Specialist Nurse. I have also worked in the USA within the stem cell transplant setting.
I have been working clinically at the Royal Marsden Hospital since 2008, and as a Lecturer Practitioner at The Royal Marsden School since 2016. I was a student here at the School several years ago where I completed my MSC in Advanced Practice in Cancer Care. My dissertation was a research study titled ‘Exploring the Lived Experience of Nurses caring for Allogeneic Haematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant patients’. It is therefore great to now work at the School and teach students, hopefully enabling them to improve the experience and outcomes of their patients through the application of higher education.
I am particularly interested in novel innovations and therapies within haemato-oncology, including CAR-T cell and other immune and cellular therapies,  and also new approaches to supportive care, and educating patients and carers.

Module Involvement

I have been involved with a variety of modules at the School, including Principles of Anti-Cancer Therapy and Critical Reflection in Clinical Practice, and currently lead on the Principles of Haemato-Oncology Care module, the Principles of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, and the Enhancing Your Practice in Cancer Care.
I am also the Lead for Level 6 modules and the BSc Programme.

Committee Involvement

I was a member of the European Group for Blood and marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy(EBMT) Scientific Committee for the EBMT Nurses Group from 2018 to 2021. In this role, I facilitated the planning and delivery of educational content for nurses at the annual international EBMT conference.
