The Royal Marsden School

Helen Foulser RN, BA(Hons), DipHE, MSc, PGCLTHE

Lecturer Practitioner

Helen FoulserI am a specialist oncology nurse, working in cancer care since qualifying in 2007. I was fortunate to join the Royal Marsden in 2008 to complete my first specialist cancer qualification whilst undertaking rotation placements to help develop and refine my specialist cancer clinical skills. It was at this time that my love for education within oncology began and I have been privileged to foster links with the Royal Marsden School both as a student and educator since then. My passion is grounded in working with health care professionals to strive for excellence in their practice to improve patient outcomes. I’m currently working with colleagues at the School to examine how specialist education impacts confidence in practice.

My clinical background is predominantly in haemato-oncology, with experience as both a ward sister for a stem cell transplant unit and as a clinical nurse specialist for leukaemia patients. Working in these posts, I developed a keen interest in improving the patient experience through the development of ambulatory care pathways, and the management of late effects. More recently I have worked within gynae-oncology, also as a clinical nurse specialist, a role which continued to influence my interest in late effects of treatment and the psychological impact of cancer diagnoses. These roles have led me to develop a specialist interest in managing mental health within cancer and the importance of person-centred care in relation to this.
