Introducing Principles of Acute Oncology Care module

We are thrilled to announce our stand-alone module Principles of Acute Oncology Care will be starting on 11 May 2023. The Module Lead, Laura Theodossy shares why the module delivery and assessment is unique.

Learners have a rare opportunity to put into practice some of the ideas and concepts introduced in the module in a safe environment with expert practitioners.

Laura Theodossy

Laura started out as a head and neck nurse and dealing with patients who had acute airwave events which made her want to learn how to deal with emergency situations to help treat her patients. This led into her moving to an ITU setting.

Subsequently, in 2014, Laura first joined The Royal Marsden School as a Module Lead for the Acute Cancer Care module.

Following the recent revalidation of The School’s modules and programmes, Laura has re-designed the module into Principles of Acute Oncology Care. This module is for anyone who deals with a patient at any point in their cancer pathway, whether in hospital or in the community, pre, post or living with and beyond, to give health professionals the core skills required to assess and manage an acute event.

As part of the module, Laura leads a full day of bespoke acute oncology simulated scenarios in a purpose-built simulation laboratory, where learners have a rare opportunity to put into practice some of the ideas and concepts introduced in the module in a safe environment with expert practitioners.

With Laura’s background as an ITU nurse, where the ethos is to, “promote education and awareness of acute oncology events”, the assignment for both Level 6 and 7 are to develop a poster of a chosen acute event to educate the learner’s team and other visiting health care professionals.

Laura teaches on a number of modules, and is also the Module Lead for Fundamentals in Cancer Care.
