Course summary

The BSc in Cancer Care course has been designed for healthcare professionals who wish to learn more about caring for those affected by cancer. It will enable those who are educated to Diploma level (or equivalent qualification) to gain further academic credits to achieve graduate status. 

This programme is aligned to the RCN/UKONS/HEE (2022) career framework for cancer clinicians. This enables learners to develop their knowledge and skills on a specialist cancer pathway which is mapped to the four pillars of advancing practice – clinical, research, education and leadership (HEE, 2017). This is a unique opportunity to study cancer care with leading experts in the field.

Who is it for?

The pathway is aimed at health and social care professionals working to further their education and professional development within the speciality of cancer care.

Cost

Costs vary depending on the choice of optional modules. Due to the flexibility of the structure, the pathway cannot be purchased as one unit. Please purchase the individual modules that you would like to undertake during an academic year. Module fees may increase in subsequent academic years.

Entry requirements

Healthcare professionals working with People Affected by Cancer (PABC). A qualification which provides 120 credits top-up for level 5 Foundation Degree or equivalent.

Professional Requirements:

  • Learners would normally be a registered healthcare professional with a recognised professional governing body (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered nurse, or a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) / Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS))

Experience:

  • Normally one year post qualification experience working in an environment caring for cancer patients 

Academic Qualifications:

  • A qualification which provides 120 credits at level 5, or equivalent
  • Competence in written and spoken English (normally IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)  

Clinical Practice Requirements:

  • Currently employed in the care, treatment, and management of cancer patients

Learning Outcomes

Clinical Practice:

  • Demonstrate the qualities and values required to deliver high quality cancer care, to diverse populations of People Affected by Cancer (PABC).
  • The ability to reflect on practice, learning from experience, critically exploring new ways of working, in collaboration with teams using effective communication, to deliver cancer care.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the wider ethical, legal and professional perspectives of safe cancer care, including those relating to cancer research, and incorporate a critical ethical/ professional dimension into complex decision making.

Leadership and Management:

  • Demonstrate understanding of their roles as clinical leaders in professional practice, disseminating current knowledge and skills to others in the practice setting.
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate cancer care issues within a multi-disciplinary context, valuing contributions made by different professional groups to PABC.

Education:

  • Critically analyse the need for effective complex care delivery in the support of people living with, through and beyond cancer, in their different care environments and with unpredictable circumstances.
  • Evaluate and apply comprehensive knowledge and skills to the current context of cancer care and the evidence base underpinning provision and development of care to PABC.
  • Demonstrate skills of critical analysis and appraisal and apply these to academic work at level 6.

Research:

  • Demonstrate understanding and application of research principles, research design and methods relevant to cancer care, and the application of these to practice.
  • Acquire and apply information and communication technologies to access the evidence-based underpinning care and to support developments in practice.
