Course summary

Clinical leadership has emerged as one of the most important concepts to deliver excellent care and improve patient outcomes within the UK and internationally (NHS Leadership Academy, 2022). This module will enable those who work in clinical and leadership roles to develop in-depth knowledge and skills required to promote and develop their professional role. The focus of the module is to enhance personal leadership skills and knowledge which then translate into improving patient outcomes in cancer care.


It will assist the learner to explore and critique the concept of leadership and consider its theoretical and practical relevance to health professionals. A wide breadth and depth of knowledge will be explored, encouraging critical analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of both the leadership knowledge base and the wider organisational culture and how this influences current healthcare leadership. Throughout the module an ‘action learning’ approach will prompt learners to reflect upon their own leadership experiences and consider how their own personal qualities can be strengthened within the context of their work environment.  


This module aims to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of current theory and practice about leadership in clinical practice, which will enable learners to apply this understanding to promote the advancement of initiatives relevant to their practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module at Level 6 you should be able to demonstrate achievement of the following learning outcomes:

  • Critically explore personal leadership behaviours and qualities and analyse how these may be further developed
  • Critically explore key leadership theories
  • Critically analyse theories of change and how these relate to leading change
  • Examine key theories of team working and team development
  • Explore key theories of organisational culture and how these apply to clinical practice

On successful completion of the module at Level 7 you should be able to demonstrate achievement of the following learning outcomes:

  • Critically appraise and evaluate key leadership theories
  • Critically review the socio-political influences driving current healthcare leadership 
  • Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise theories of change and consider their relevance to leading cancer practice
  • Critically examine key theories of team working and apply these to cancer practice
  • Explore key theories of organisational culture and quality improvement

  • Level 6: Essay 2,000 words
  • Level 7: Essay 3,000 words

Student support

Tutorials with the module leader or personal tutor are available if students require additional help with the planning and writing of their assignments. Email and telephone support are also available from the module leader/personal tutor. 

The Royal Marsden School uses an online environment called Moodle which students must access during their studies to support and enhance our courses. The site provides resources and communication tools. All students will be provided with a username and password to access module specific sections as well as general learning support such as study skills and library resources. Students also have access to the David Adams Library and Electronic Resource Centre.
